Job Description
Responsible for initiating, directing, and executing all pre-clinical drug discovery research and development goals and aligning Research programs and goals with corporate strategy. Responsible for allocating and prioritizing resources, developing and overseeing department budgets and timelines, and developing/ implementing department strategy. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and company objectives and directs implementation. Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles and to achieve company objectives in creative and effective ways. Responsible for ensuring that department and projects use up-to-date research information and current techniques to keep Biogen Idec drug discovery and development programs innovative and efficient. Manages and provides career development for a functional group. Responsible for writing manuscripts, invention disclosures and scientific reports and regulatory submissions. Individuals at every level are expected to act with integrity, be action-oriented, to be flexible in their approaches, to effectively set priorities, and to participate effectively on teams.

Qualifications
Extensive experience and in-depth technical expertise in one or more scientific areas. Typically does not perform bench work or research directly.
Extensive experience and understanding of several scientific areas. Proficient in using management techniques, such as coaching employees for peak performance, effectively setting goals and measuring accomplishments, and applying corrective action as needed. Actively maintains and expands a broad base of scientific knowledge and knowledge of drug discovery/development. May be the top company technical expert in his/her discipline. Provides operational input into projects from all areas of the company. In-depth knowledge of best practices in a defined area of expertise within Research and familiarity with several others both within Research and outside. General understanding of pertinent business and functional groups within the company and of how these groups work together. Working knowledge of all relevant business strategies within the company. Comprehensive understanding of relevant industry issues.

Education
PhD in a relevant scientific discipline, typical incumbent has 20 years experience
Hiring minimum, PhD, or exceptional non-PhDs. Years of experience considered on an individual basis by the Head of Research. Excellent strategic and managerial capabilities.
