About Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research
At Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (“NIBR”), the global research organization of Novartis, we are committed to discovering innovative medicines to cure disease and improve human health. By hiring the best academic, biotech, and pharmaceutical trained scientists, we have fostered an atmosphere for drug discovery where innovation is rewarded. It is ultimately the talent of the individual that determines our success, while our state-of-the-art technologies and resources enable these ideas to be realized.
NIBR has sites in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Emeryville, CA; Basel, Switzerland; Horsham, UK; and Shanghai, China. Our Cambridge, MA, location is the global research headquarters and has focuses in areas including Pathway Biology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Muscle, Epigenetics, Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine.  It has a variety of positions in Biology, Chemistry, Biologics, Protein Sciences, and other technologies and additionally in functions such as Patents, Computational Resources, Alliance Management, Operations and other areas that support our scientific resources.
Job Description / Key Responsibilities
The newly established Neurosciences & Respiratory Disorders departments are looking for an experienced electrophysiologist. The candidate will assume a hands-on role as part of a team focused on supporting drug discovery efforts in both departments. The candidate will lead a lab that develops and runs automated electrophysiology assays to support high-throughput screening and medicinal chemistry efforts of our ion channel targets. Experience in manual and automated electrophysiology is essential. Experience working with state-dependent modulators of ion channels and a strong understanding of ion channel biophysics is highly desirable. A background in neuroscience and experience working with primary neurons will be a significant advantage. As an integral member of ion channel drug discovery teams, the candidate will design strategies to solve challenges, execute experiments, identify next steps, and communicate findings to the team. Excellent communication and teamwork will be critical.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates will have a PhD and at least 2-5 years of postdoctoral experience in an academic or industrial setting. Candidates who have a B.S./M.S. degree with more than 10 years of drug discovery experience and strong technical leadership skills are also encouraged to apply. Technical requirements include manual patch-clamp and automated electrophysiology and functional characterization of mechanism of drug action on ion channels. Experience in isolation and culture of primary neurons and glia from rodents, basic molecular biology and cell culture, membrane potential and Calcium flux/FLIPR assays will be an added advantage.  The candidate should be able to work under minimal supervision, be team-oriented and collaborative. The candidate should be an effective communicator, be organized and detail-oriented, and adept at trouble shooting.
