OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

As lab manager for the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research (SC), creates and coordinates multiple systems and processes for efficient running of the shared lab space at the Broad Institute occupied by a group of about 15-20 researchers under several Principal Investigators. Is part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary effort to discover novel diagnostics or therapeutics for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, using varied approaches including genetics, chemical biology, molecular biology, and enzymology. Serves as a primary point of contact for internal departments (Purchasing, Facilities, IT) on issues regarding SC laboratory facilities. Uses a high level of discretion and independence to prioritize projects.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

- In consultation with the Assistant Director and key lab members, coordinates and oversees lab processes aimed at managing SC resources.
- Continually aids in and adapts to the creation of new and improved techniques in data analysis, experiment design and implementation in an effort to optimize techniques and lab protocols.
- May forecast and purchase materials and supply needs as required by project details.
- Interacts with vendors and collaborators to investigate novel supplies and technologies. Interacts with all levels of staff to assist with evaluations of new equipment.
- Creates, documents and maintains organization and inventory systems (either databases or spreadsheets) for efficient use and allocation of lab and storage areas and for special reagents such as cell lines, plasmids, chemicals.
- Communicates and coordinates with all lab members and with the Assistant Director to ensure that these processes are adequately followed.
- Manages, with guidance from SC PIs and the Assistant Director, annual updates and addenda to required administrative approvals (including Biological Research Registrations and Animal Care and Use protocols).
- Coordinates ordering for all lab members. Uses in-house systems and an internal database to manage these orders.
- Other tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in life sciences and at least 5 years of experience in a related field required. Master's degree preferred.
- Some supervisory and or project management experience preferred.
- Must possess a familiarity with basic molecular biology and tissue culture techniques, and the operation of standard lab equipment.
- Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work with little supervision.
- Excellent knowledge of computers and experience with databases required; expertise with Microsoft Excel and Filemaker Pro (or MS Access or similar database program) required.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with external contacts in a fast paced environment required.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Must be able to use sound judgment to handle a variety of tasks and to shift priorities simultaneously, as well as to effectively solve problems.
