Manager, Sequencing Platform Project Management
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
Leads Sequencing Platform Project Management team. Manages coordination with groups throughout the Sequencing Platform to ensure production sequencing data are delivered in a timely and efficient fashion and meet the scientific goals of the project while working within the constraints of the production teams. Manages communication with Sequencing Program leadership and/or outside collaborators to ensure project goals and expectations are clear.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
-Manages Sequencing Platform Project Management Team.
- Ensures team is appropriately staffed and has necessary resources to manage sequencing projects, generate project-specific and platform-wide reports, and communicate with internal scientists, outside collaborators, and platform teams. Ensures that team goals are met and deliverables are produced on schedule.
- Manages team coordination with groups throughout the Sequencing Platform to evaluate the feasibility of new sequencing projects as well as the impact on Platform operations, and to set appropriate schedules.
- Ensures that Project Management Team serves as advocates for sequencing projects and their scientific goals, and that this is accomplished while maintaining professionalism in interactions with other platform teams.
- Manages team communication with Sequencing Program leadership and scientists. Ensures that sequencing project goals and expectations are clear, and that any non-standard requests are sent for the appropriate approvals. Ensures that the team provides timely feedback to scientific leadership on project progress or blocking issues.
- Manages team communication with external collaborators. Ensures that team members communicate professionally and are equipped with the appropriate expertise for each communication type. Coordinates external communication with other involved Broad parties (such as the project scientist).
- Works with project scientists and workgroups to document and obtain agreement on project plans that include: goals related to project scope, quality, timeline and cost; anticipated obstacles and implementation strategies; roles and responsibilities; plans for monitoring progress.
- Monitors the progress of individual projects and the pipeline as a whole. Produces internal reports that allow Program staff to see progress, quality, costs, and timelines relative to the goals of individual projects and overall pipeline. Helps to identify and resolve blocking issues.
- Gathers project status information from relevant workgroups and updates databases, webpages and spreadsheets as needed. Ensures that information in databases, spreadsheets and websites is current by reviewing and updating routinely.
- Develops new systems and processes to facilitate project management and tracking.
• Assists with the preparation of grant proposals and reports for funding agencies and collaborators.
- Manage communication with outside collaborators about project logistics.
- Ensures that projects and activities adhere to institutional guidelines with regards to safety and regulatory compliance.
- Manages short-term projects for Associate Director, Sequencing Platform.
- Assists Associate Director in evaluating grant finances and project estimates.
- Manages performance of Managers tracking their individual performance and by conducting employee performance reviews. Meets regularly with Managers and Team Leaders to gather feedback on team performance.
- Other related tasks as required.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directly supervises Project Managers
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or relevant discipline required; advanced degree preferred. 10+ years experience in a molecular biology environment.
- Should have direct experience or should be highly familiar with genomic methodologies such as sequencing and/or array-based genotyping including technical aspects, quality control, and current methods of data analysis.
- Supervisory and project management experience required; PMP preferred.
- Experience with customer or client relations preferred.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with external contacts in a fast paced environment required.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Must be able to use sound judgment to handle a variety of tasks and to shift priorities simultaneously, as well as to effectively solve problems.
