Please join us to learn more about what the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection looks for during an inspection from a MassDEP inspector and to ask questions before the MassDEP shows up at your facility.
Matt Barber will speak about the MassDEP requirements, the inspection process, and common violations in the biotech sector including industrial wastewater, air, and hazardous waste. There will also be time for discussion, so please bring your questions.

Matthew Barber is an environmental analyst for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Northeast Regional Office Bureau of Waste Prevention in Wilmington, MA. He is responsible for conducting multi-media environmental compliance inspections of facilities including biotech and pharmaceutical companies as well as colleges and hospitals, covering areas of hazardous waste, air quality, industrial wastewater, toxic use reduction, underground storage tanks, and solid waste. Matthew holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science.
Susan Smits, CHMM, CET, TURP, Vice President of Operations, Mabbett & Associates, Inc.
Susan has over 20 years of environmental, and health and safety (EH&S) consulting and project management experience. As Mabbett’s Vice President of Operations she is responsible for the management of day-to-day technical operations and for establishing a high standard of quality assurance and quality control for all project deliverables and services. She also serves as a Senior Project Manager/Program Manager for projects in the private and public sectors. Susan’s professional-technical services include comprehensive EH&S consulting and engineering services. She also has extensive experience with regulatory agencies associated with permitting and enforcement cases.
Prior to joining Mabbett in 2000, Susan served nine years as a Bioenvironmental Engineering officer in the US Air Force. She was assigned to four Air Force installations where she directed the bases’ industrial hygiene, environmental protection and radiation protection programs.
