LAW & POLICY: Bilski v. Kappos: The Uncertain Fate of Medical and Diagnostic Method Patents

The Law & Policy Committee is pleased to present a morning discussion on the current status of patent-eligible subject matter as it concerns biotechnology. This seminar will offer a brief statutory and case law history of patent-eligible subject matter leading to the Bilski v. Kappos case, currently before the U.S. Supreme Court and the potential impacts that a Supreme Court ruling may have on patenting of methods of treatment and medical diagnostic inventions. The seminar will provide members with an overview of the federal appellate court decision that prompted the Supreme Court review and the arguments presented by the parties and amicus before the Court. Tom Engellenner is a partner and chairman of Nutter's Life Sciences practice group with expertise in the patenting and licensing of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.
Reza Mollaaghababa, Ph.D. is a partner with Nutter's Intellectual Property department, focusing on intellectual property law in diverse fields of technology, including nanotechnology, medical devices, and diagnostics.
