JOINT HR & SECURITY: Background Investigations: The Case for Due Diligence

Wednesday, March 17 2010
8:30 am – 10:30 am

Have you ever had an uneasy feeling while talking to someone or that you may not be receiving completely factual information? Join us for this session on Background Investigations and Pre-Screening to learn why that vague feeling may be correct. We will discuss the role of due diligence investigations, pre-employment screening, third party vendor screening, the need for infinity testing, the pitfalls of internet searches, and the three most common mistakes of hiring teams.

The session is designed to help Human Resource, Asset Protection, and other Professionals better understand the elements of a thorough due diligence investigation. We will discuss the rationale for employment pre-screening, the legal issues of protecting personally identifying information, the reasons for conducting due diligence investigations, how to stay abreast of the animal rights activists, why and how you should look at your third party vendors, as well as the pros and cons of in house investigations as opposed to contracting for these services. We will also explore identity fraud and how best to protect against breeches, what the employer responsibility may be, and the role of corporate compliance and oversight.

Topics will include Permissible Purpose, One Size Does Not Fit All, Building a Bullet Proof Release, Records Retention and Storage, and Infinity Testing. Attendees will learn what should be included or excluded in a background investigation, the need for Releases, the types of Releases, FCRA considerations, GLB considerations, credit as a predictor of responsibility, criminal history information and the best use of these facts, confidentiality and important resources to use as a guide.

Additionally, we will provide an open forum for attendees to share their own experiences and thoughts on how to be more efficient and accurate in this aspect of their responsibilities. This program is designed as an interactive learning experience with both didactic and dynamic presentation techniques.

Session length: Presentation - 60 to 75 minutes, Q&A - 15 to 20 minutes.

Speaker: William Connors, President, Risk Management Advisors, Inc.

THIS MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE MassBio OFFICES, One Cambridge Center, 9th Floor, Cambridge, MA.
