Recent articles in the mainstream press have raised issues regarding protections for subjects who volunteer to participate in clinical research, most notably compensation for ongoing medical care for subjects who are injured by adverse events. Sponsors may assume that they have insurance coverage for these events, or that the subject's health plan will take care of the medical expenses. Oftentimes this is not the case.
Our panel will provide an overview of current US legal requirements for subject injury compensation, discuss an IRB's perspective, a sponsor's approach to handling these situations and provide an update on Sponsor insurance coverage for subject injury.
