Located in Boston, the CBR Institute for Biomedical Research, Inc. (CBR) is an independent, nonprofit research and educational institution with a world class faculty who place CBR at the forefront in the areas of immunology, inflammation, RNAi, hemostasis and cancer research. CBR was founded in 1952 by Dr. Edwin J. Cohn to study the proteins in human plasma and to develop new systems for blood separation. In 1986 CBR became affiliated academically with Harvard Medical School to increase the teaching capabilities of both institutions. Within this affiliation CBR is responsible for its own research programs, governance and finances. Today, CBR occupies 67,000 square feet of research and support facilities for 18 investigator laboratories and more than 200 biomedical researchers. CBR’s average NIH grant exceeds $500,000, a level that places it among the top one percent of NIH funded institutions in the country. CBR is currently embarking on an ambitious initiative to double the size of its research facilities and quadruple the size of its endowment to fund research initiatives that will continue to bring forth significant contributions to understanding some of the most complex and intractable health problems of our time.
