The research conducted at AstraZeneca R&D Boston focuses on developing innovative new therapies within the cancer and infectious disease areas. In addition, AstraZeneca R&D Boston is home to AstraZeneca’s cutting-edge North American Enabling Science and Technology Center. • Infectious Disease research – The need for new antimicrobial agents is urgent. In Boston, AstraZeneca is leading the search for new drugs by applying the powerful new technology known as Genomics. When Genomics is coupled with molecular biology, the Company can quickly identify the potential novel drug targets of a microorganism. AstraZeneca R&D Boston is applying these advances to our pursuit of new classes of antimicrobials that hold promise in combating the growing occurrence of drug-resistant bacteria and fungi. • Cancer research – AstraZeneca R&D Boston adds important new resources to the Company’s world-leading research efforts in cancer. Collaborative efforts within cancer research and chemical and biological technology development are strengthening the Company’s contributions to the creation of life-enhancing drugs for cancer patients. • Enabling Science & Technology – Boston is the home of AstraZeneca’s North American Enabling Science and Technology (EST) Center, a powerful source of innovation to the Company’s worldwide pharmaceutical R&D organization. The EST Center combines advanced, high-throughput technologies and novel scientific approaches in the following areas: Drug Target Identification and Validation, Combinatorial and Parallel Chemical Synthesis, Bioinformatics, Cheminformatics, and Mathematical Modeling of Human Physiology and Disease.
