Northeastern University is a practice-oriented, student-centered private Research university located in downtown Boston. Founded in 1898, Northeastern offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs and is internationally known for its focus on practice-oriented education, combining liberal arts, professional and cooperative education.

Units at Northeastern with expertise and interest in areas relevant to the biotechnology industry include the College of Arts and Sciences, (programs in biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, biomedical physics, behavioral neurosciences, marine biology and marine science), the Bouve College of Health Sciences, (comprised of schools of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Professions), the College of Computer Science, University College (part-time and evening programs for working professionals including a certificate in bioinformatics), the Barnett Institute for Chemical and Biological Analysis (a center for advanced interdisciplinary research in the molecular sciences, and the Center for Cardiovascular Targeting. The Northeastern University Center for Drug Discovery is dedicated to the multidisciplinary training of scientists in the art and science of drug discovery, the development of allied facilitative technologies, the discovery and characterization of potential new medications, and collaboration with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Academic year 2000-01 saw the introduction of an MS program in bioinformatics jointly with Boston University. A molecular biotechnology initiative with focused research and educational components is currently under development.
