MassBio Members save on MassBioEd Training with New Program

March 1, 2011

Biotechnology companies with fewer than 50 employees can now save 50% on MassBioEd job-related training programs for their employees.

Six MassBioEd courses have been accepted under the state’s Workforce Training Fund’s Express Program, meaning companies can be reimbursed 50% of the employees’ registration fee. MassBio member companies continue to receive a $150 discount on all MassBioEd courses, meaning even more savings.

The objective of the Workforce Training Fund Express Program is to help small companies provide quick and straightforward training for their employees by making existing development courses a cost-effective alternative.

The MassBioEd courses currently offered through this program are: Courses

  • Leadership Training for Scientists (begins March 17)
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practices (March 30)
  • Overview of Clinical Research (begins on March 31)
  • Biotechnology Project Management (begins on April 6)
  • Biotech for the Non-Scientist (May 10-11)
  • Biotech Presentation Skills (begins May 12)

“More than 350 MassBio member companies have 50 employees or fewer and can participate in this grant, with over 250 of those being biotech companies,” said Hannah Yun, Director of the Education and Training Programs at MassBioEd. “This is a great opportunity for us to be able to provide an additional service to these members.”

In order successfully receive the discounted rate, employees must first register through MassBioEd and then follow up with the state registration process. Each employee can receive up to $3,000 in training funds per course.

Requests are granted on a rolling basis, and processing the training fund application can take six weeks.

“Our hope is that more of our member companies will be able to take advantage of our course offerings despite the challenging economic times,” Yun said when discussing the significance of this opportunity. “Many companies have scaled back their training budgets in recent years, and this may help accommodate their tight budgets.”

MassBio can not guarantee approval through the Workforce Training Fund Express Program. Companies are only eligible to receive $30,000 within a 24-month period. To process reimbursement, employees must simply submit a copy of the invoice, proof of payment, and an evaluation of the course. Government employees are not eligible for discounts.
