Charlton is BioReady™
Charlton earns Gold rating for biotech readiness
May 29, 2012 (Charlton, MA)—Charlton has received a Gold BioReady™ rating, signifying its readiness to work with biotechnology companies interested in locating there, according to the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio).
This rating is based on a survey of the town’s zoning bylaws, building codes and other business and industry-related criteria.
MassBio and partner organizations began the statewide BioReady™ Communities Campaign in 2008 in order to provide background to municipal officials about the biotech industry and offer guidance on how to position municipalities as destinations for biotech laboratory and manufacturing facilities. Charlton joins a community of 70 BioReady™ rated communities across the state.
“Both the Charlton Planning Board and Economic Development Commission (EDC) are appreciative of receiving MassBio’s Gold BioReady Rating. It reflects our efforts to-date to plan and develop biotechnology within the local business inventory, as well as our continued commitment to prioritizing biotechnology efforts and opportunities along the Route 20 business corridor in Charlton,” said Alan Gordon, Charlton’s Economic Development Director.
EDC Chairman Anthony J. Detarando added, “The EDC sees tremendous biotechnology site location and business development opportunities along our Route 20 corridor. The Gold BioReady Rating should significantly assist current industry interests who are working with the EDC as well as attract additional users to the corridor.”
BioReady™ communities are ranked as bronze, silver, gold or platinum, a designation which helps Massachusetts cities and towns market themselves to biotechnology companies looking to expand or relocate. As part of the campaign, the MassBio Economic Development Advisory Group (EDAG) developed criteria to both guide communities in their pursuit of biotech facility opportunities and rate them for BioReadiness™ in order to provide each with a tangible marketing tool.
