Millipore Partners with the American Cancer Society

March 23, 2009

BILLERICA, Mass. - (Business Wire) Millipore Corporation a Life Science leader providing technologies, tools and services for bioscience research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, today announced it will partner with the American Cancer Society to support critical research and awareness programs dedicated to combating cancer. Through this partnership, Millipore's Corporate Giving Program will provide a $20,000 grant to support the Society's Daffodil Days® campaign and the Cancer Research Challenge, a partnership with the Society and the Massachusetts Biotech Council.

"Millipore is proud to support the American Cancer Society and its commitment to combating this devastating disease" says Tara Duplaga, Millipore's Corporate Giving and Community Affairs Representative. "Addressing challenging human health issues is a key initiative in our business practices which we sought to incorporate into our philanthropic endeavors in 2009. Given the Society's vast achievements in cancer discovery and our products' use in cancer research, we felt a partnership with the American Cancer Society made perfect sense."

New England Cancer Research Challenge

$10,000 of Millipore's grant will be allocated to the Cancer Research Challenge, issued to members of the Massachusetts Biotech Council to support the region's most promising cancer research by beginning investigators. The Society believes the creativity and fresh approach which this group typically employs may be an important factor towards a cure. Unfortunately, governmental funding sources tend to overlook these researchers in favor of established investigators. Millipore and its peers strive to address this discrepancy through the "Challenge" which aims to provide $1.4 million to the American Cancer Society to fund 10 top-ranked Postdoctoral Fellowships in New England.

Daffodil Days®

Millipore will direct the remaining $10,000 of its grant to sponsor the Society's Daffodil Days campaign which offers daffodils, the Society's flower of hope, in appreciation for contributions. Eight of Millipore's offices throughout the U.S. will participate in the event which runs from March 16 - 20, 2009. Employees from Millipore's Massachusetts-based sites will also deliver "Gift of Hope" daffodil bouquets to area hospitals for cancer patients. Proceeds from this campaign provide vital resources to local cancer patients including transportation to treatments, education about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection, lodging for long distance treatments, and support services for patients and their caregivers.
