Promising Study of Bio/Med in New York to Premiere at MEDTECH 2014

August 19, 2014

MedTech Association, a trade association for bioscience and medical technology (Bio/Med) companies in New York State, will release its study of current challenges and future opportunities for the industry in New York at the MEDTECH 2014 conference slated for Sept. 15 and 16 in Albany, N.Y. The report is sponsored by the Workforce Development Institute (WDI), National Grid, NYSEG and RGE.

The data encompassed in the report comes from many sources, including in-depth quantitative and qualitative research and analysis. Life science market research specialists, KJT Group of Honeoye Falls, surveyed and conducted interviews with Bio/Med executives regarding the challenges and opportunities they saw for the industry, with a specific eye on workforce development in New York. The economic development consulting organization, Battelle’s Technology Partnership Practice, provided employment and trend data and academic and industry best practices to MedTech’s industry report. The report is designed to give a snapshot of the industry in New York with special emphasis on Upstate New York.

Both analyses address the industry in general, workforce/talent development and its economic impact. The study reveals a developing ecosystem on par with some of the country’s hottest Bio/Med locales. Among the findings:

  • Upstate New York supports more than 28,000 Bio/Med jobs. If the area outside metropolitan New York City were its own state, it would rank 18th in the nation.
  • Upstate’s specialized concentration in medical devices and equipment is 26 percent higher than the national average.
  • Employment in the areas of research, testing and medical labs is rapidly growing in Upstate New York, where this job concentration is 12 percent higher than the national average.

A discussion of the study will take place alongside keynote speakers, 30-plus technology showcases and more programming at MEDTECH 2014, the state’s largest gathering of Bio/Med professionals.

To be among the first to hear the complete results of the industry study and participate in two days of programming, register now at MEDTECH 2014 is sponsored by AMRI, Angio Dynamics, CONMED, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Welch Allyn.
