Are you an industrial microbiologist or bioprocess engineer and looking to increase your skillset in downstream operations? The Biomanufacturing Education and Training Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute is offering a 4-day certificate program in Downstream Principles and Techniques September 8-11, 2025!

Improve your basic skills in separation and purification of bio-manufactured products with both single-use and stainless equipment. This training includes theoretical background information on cell harvest and clarification, TFF, and chromatography, including column packing. You will also develop a better understanding of the various protein characteristics and how they affect the purification process, how resins are selected, and how a purification process is developed.

Upon completion of this intensive training, participants will have direct experience and understanding in the following areas:

  • Understand the principles of centrifugation and how cell harvesting and clarification are completed
  • Understand the principles and applications for depth filtration
  • Understand how protein characteristics facilitate the purification process
  • Become familiar with the different types of chromatographic processes and the principles behind each type
  • Identify the components of a chromatography system and their functions
  • Perform column packing and peak evaluation
  • Identify the components of a TFF system and their functions
  • Understand how viruses are inactivated and removed
  • Understand how a purification process is developed

    Who Should Attend?

  • Biomanufacturing associates and operators involved in downstream operations
  • Biomanufacturing associates and operators involved in upstream processing who want to become cross-trained in purification
  • Biomanufacturing facility maintenance, metrology and engineering personnel responsible for purification areas
  • Project and program managers in the biomanufacturing industry
  • Sales and marketing personnel for equipment and material manufacturers that serve the biotechnology industry
  • Quality assurance personnel responsible for the review of downstream process documentation
  • Technical writers responsible for generating batch records and recipes
  • Process development associates
  • Research scientists
  • Bioprocess engineers
