Reflecting on 2017’s Young Professionals Series

Dec 20, 2017

As 2017 comes to an end, we wanted to reflect on a new initiative launched this past spring, the MassBio Young Professionals Series, that's turned out to be quite a success, and will be built upon in 2018. Recognizing that traditional networking events can be daunting for the less seasoned professional, we decided to host more activity-based events that were targeted towards younger individuals working in the life sciences.

Player1Player2 Event

We started off in May, hosting a Player1Player2 event at LaughBoston. MassBio members networked and drank as they played games such as Mario Kart, Cards Against Humanity & Settlers of Catan.

Boston Cannons Lacrosse Game

In June, we headed to Harvard Stadium for the Boston Cannons Lacrosse Game. MassBio members played Corn Hole, ate BBQ and watched Boston’s Lacrosse Team take on Ohio Machine. The weather couldn’t have been better, so it was a perfect night to sip a Summer Shandy outside, surrounded by an energetic group of young professionals.

Road Races

In July and September, we traded in the lab coats for sneakers, and had MassBio teams at two separate road races. July’s Summer Classic 5k started in Central Square, just in time for a severe thunderstorm to roll through. We were drenched head to toe, but it was quite exhilarating to run down Mass Ave in the pouring rain. There was plenty of beer at the finish line (that helped).

We had much better weather in September at the RaceCancer 5k that took place at Artesani Park. We had members from Janitronics, Boston Interactive and Creoptix. We then headed to Miller’s Ale House in Watertown for an after-party and to watch the Patriot’s home opener.

Paint Nite

Lastly, in October, we hosted a Paint Nite at MassBio. Members traded in their pipettes for paint brushes and painted the Boston Skyline. Who knew scientists were also such great artists?  There was also lots of pizza and plenty of networking. It was nice to see many of these same YoPros at MassBio’s Oktoberfest the following week.

We were pleasantly surprised at how well-attended these events were this year, and are already working out our YoPro plans for 2018. Stayed tuned!
