MassBio West provides MassBio members in Western MA easier access to benefits; supports life sciences growth beyond Boston/Cambridge

April 29, 2019 (CAMBRIDGE, MA) – The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio®) today announced a new office at UMass Amherst’s Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS), MassBio West. The office will provide MassBio members in the western part of the state easier access to MassBio benefits and will support further growth of the life sciences cluster across the state.

“The life sciences industry in Massachusetts has seen incredible growth over the last 10 years, forcing companies to think creatively about where they set up their operations. It’s no longer necessary to be in the Boston/Cambridge area to take advantage of quality lab facilities and networking opportunities,” said Robert K. Coughlin, President & CEO of MassBio. “When looking at our current and future membership needs, it was a no-brainer to partner with UMass Amherst and its top-notch IALS facility to spread these benefits across the state and to all members.”

In addition to the office opening, MassBio and UMass have formed a partnership to offer MassBio members a 10 percent discount at UMass Amherst Core Facilities, a collection of more than 30 cutting-edge equipment facilities available to researchers from government, academia and industry on a fee-for-service basis all while retaining their intellectual property (IP). Benefits include:

  • Over 30 Core Facilities with resources for:
    • Precision manufacturing
    • Characterization
    • Human health monitoring
    • Cellular and molecular analysis
  • Competitive rates
  • Managed by full-time experienced professionals
  • Streamlined contracts
  • IP free zone
  • Rentable research laboratory space in the Collaboratories

Peter Reinhart, director of IALS, said, “UMass Amherst’s Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) hosts some of the most sophisticated core equipment facilities in the state that help translate life science research and technology development towards product candidates. IALS also facilitates industry collaborations, new ventures and contributes to workforce development in the discovery, development, and manufacture of medical devices, biomolecules, and delivery vehicles. MassBio opening an office at IALS will help raise awareness of the unique resources available to MassBio’s extensive membership.”
