White House Announces the National Microbiome Initiative

The new National Microbiome Initiative aims to advance microbiome science in ways that will benefit individuals, communities, and the planet.

Today, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), in collaboration with Federal agencies and private-sector stakeholders, is announcing the National Microbiome Initiative (NMI). The NMI aims to advance understanding of microbiomes in order to aid in the development of useful applications in areas such as health care, food production, and environmental restoration. 
 
 
We are proud of the Massachusetts-based institutions and companies who have committed resources to this very exciting scientific endeavor!
 
Some highlights:
 
Vedanta Biosciences will invest $40 million over the next 2 years in advancing translational microbiome science.
 
Boston University will hire 8-10 faculty focused on interdisciplinary microbiome fields, and intends to make 2 new doctoral tracks available to up to 15 PhD students annually.
 
The Janssen Human Microbiome Institute, based in Cambridge, is developing a network of entrepreneurs and scientists passionate about accelerating microbiome research.
