Statement by MassBio President & CEO Robert K. Coughlin on the Repeal of the Medical Device Tax

Jul 26, 2018

“The House’s passage this week of bipartisan legislation to permanently repeal the medical device excise tax is a win for patients and a win for Massachusetts. The medical device industry is a critical part of the Massachusetts economy and life sciences industry with 480 companies headquartered here with more than 26,000 jobs accounting for nearly $2 billion in payroll. Their innovation is powering the future of patient care with advances in combination products and companion diagnostics that allow us to tap into the full potential of precision medicine. The permanent repeal of the device tax ensures these companies have the resources and regulatory certainty to deliver the next generation of breakthrough devices to patients around the world.

"I want to personally thank Reps. Clark, Moulton, Lynch, and Keating for voting for this bill. As it moves to the Senate, I am heartened by Sens. Markey and Warren’s on-going support for the repeal and urge them to support quick passage of this measure in the Senate.”
