MassBio and partner organizations began the BioReady® Communities Campaign in early 2008 to help enable Massachusetts to maintain its global leadership in biotechnology by increasing the inventory of real and potential biotechnology facility sites in the state.

As part of the BioReady® Campaign, MassBio has developed ratings for municipalities who fill out an application with information on their zoning practices and infrastructure capacity. Our focus with these ratings is to help biotechnology companies find the most favorable destinations in the Commonwealth and to enable the state and its cities and towns to effectively tell their story to the biotechnology industry. BioReady®-rated cities and towns have made a commitment to biotechnology.

Want to help your community become BioReady? Read our full municipal guide covering life sciences basics, including regulatory frameworks, safety considerations, and facility requirements.

If you are interested in receiving a MassBio BioReady® Community designation for your municipality, please fill in this brief application below to tell us more. Before the BioReady® Ratings are publicized by MassBio, you will receive confirmation of your community’s rating from MassBio. We re-rate BioReady® communities on a rolling basis.

BioReady® Rating Application

  • BioReady® Communities: Bronze Rating Criteria Questions

An affirmative answer to the next two questions will enable your community to receive a MassBio BioReady® Rating of at least BRONZE.
  • BioReady® Communities: Silver Rating Criteria Questions

If your municipality has met the criteria for a Bronze BioReady® rating, an affirmative answer to most of the next 3 questions will enable your community to receive a higher BioReady® rating of SILVER. Municipalities also achieve SILVER status if they have either designated parcels as Priority Development Sites through the state’s Chapter 43D or they have had sites designated by the Commonwealth as Massachusetts Growth Districts. MassBio will verify this information independently.
  • BioReady® Communities: Gold Rating Criteria Questions

If your municipality has met the criteria for a Bronze and Silver BioReady® rating, affirmative answers to the next set of questions will enable your community to receive a higher BioReady® rating of GOLD.
  • BioReady® Communities: Platinum Rating Criteria Questions

If your municipality has met the criteria for a Bronze, Silver, and Gold BioReady® rating, affirmative answers to the next set of questions will enable your community to receive the highest BioReady® rating of PLATINUM.
[An example of such a site would be a 20-acre parcel upon which plans for a biomanufacturing facility of 100,000 square feet have already been permitted through the local approvals process.] In essence, the existence of such a site would provide a clear example to prospective projects that the municipality has gone to great lengths to identify and prepare a site for a biotechnology laboratory or manufacturing facility.
  • Thank you

Thank you for assisting us in this endeavor. It is our hope that the ratings will help your community better market itself to the growing biotechnology industry and help enable Massachusetts to maintain its competitive advantages as a global leader in biotechnology. Before BiorReady® Ratings are publicized by MassBio, you will receive confirmation of your community’s rating from MassBio.
