Gloucester Biotechnology Academy, the educational entity of Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI), prepares high school graduates for lab technician roles in biotechnology and life science labs. Students engage in 6 months of hands-on training in molecular biology, cell culture, and biomanufacturing – in addition to a robust career skills curriculum – before starting a 3- or 6-month co-op in a professional lab. Partner companies benefit from well-trained entry-level talent while providing real-world experience for vocational learners. While many companies are eager to hire their Academy co-op students, a permanent position is not a requirement to participate.
For companies with 100 or fewer employees in Massachusetts, reimbursement of co-op compensation (up to $20 per hour) is available for up to four Academy students per year. Beyond internship compensation, there are no additional costs or fees for hosting an Academy student.
If you’re interested in connecting with highly skilled and motivated technicians – and expanding and diversifying your company’s talent pool – we’d love to hear from you! To join our network of industry partners and access student resumes, please contact laura.richane@gmgi.org.
