Progress often requires equal parts patience and persistence. For one group of Monash University researchers, their patience and persistence are finally paying off as they celebrate reaching the next major milestone in their decade-long research journey.
Monash’s A/Prof Lucy Vivash, Prof Terence O’Brien, and University of Melbourne’s Prof Chris Hovens recently secured orphan drug designation (ODD) status for sodium selenate as a treatment for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from the US Food and Drug Administration, following previous designations from the European Medicines Agency for sodium selenate as a treatment for PSP and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), two neurodegenerative conditions with high unmet clinical need.
The research team is wrapping up Phase II trials and is currently seeking partnerships for Phase III trials and to progress the pathway to regulatory approval for marketing.
