The following are excerpts from a Boston Business Journal article that published on March 26, 2025:

Amid a series of attacks from the Trump administration on the life sciences and healthcare industries, Gov. Maura Healey said she is committed to making sure that Massachusetts not only survives this time of uncertainty, but thrives.

“The Trump administration’s attacks on science, attacks on healthcare, really strike at the core of our ecosystem and our economy,” Healey said, speaking at MassBio’s State of Possible Conference Wednesday.

The governor pointed out that every dollar that’s invested in research in Massachusetts returns $2 to $3 in economic activity. Healey added that she fears these funding cuts “are going to cost people not only jobs, but people’s lives.”

As an outsized recipient of life sciences capital from the private and public sectors alike, Massachusetts is at greater risk from these cuts.

“Every crisis, every challenge, presents an opportunity. It does in your labs, it does in your spaces. And you know, government is not different from science in that regard,” Healey said. “We’ve got to lean in and embrace this opportunity right now to think about different ways that we can do things, to innovate, to lean in to make the most of our collective talents and skills.”
