Legislative Update: Week of January 6, 2020

LAST WEEK

Governor Baker announced he will deliver his State of the Commonwealth address on Tuesday, January 21, the day before he is expected to release his FY2021 budget proposal. This address provides the Governor an opportunity to outline and discuss his priorities for 2020 and beyond.

THIS WEEK

Representative Jen Benson’s resignation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives will go into effect on Wednesday as she leaves her seat to become the next President of the Alliance for Business Leadership. Prior to accepting the new role, Rep. Benson was co-chair of the Joint Committee on Healthcare Financing. It is not yet clear who will replace her in that role as the House continues to develop their healthcare reform bill for this session.

On Saturday, the MBTA will begin a months-long maintenance project on the Red Line, between Harvard and Alewife stations. As the biotech cluster continues to expand in Cambridge and beyond, reliability and ongoing maintenance of the Red Line is critical in supporting this economic growth and talent acquisition. The project is scheduled to be completed by April 26th.
