Legislative Update: Week of October 18, 2021

Oct 18, 2021

LAST WEEK

On Tuesday, Senator Brownsberger and Representative Moran, co-chairs of the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting, released draft maps of new legislative districts, aiming to maximize opportunities across the state for minority populations “by drawing up more districts where Black, Hispanic and Asian residents, or some combination of the three, account for over half a district’s population.”  The committee is accepting public comments on the new maps until October 18. Additionally, on Thursday, the state legislators enacted and sent Governor Baker a $303 million supplemental budget, to close out the books on Fiscal Year 2021.

In Federal news, Politico reported last week that Robert Califf is being considered by President Biden for the position of FDA Commissioner. Califf is a cardiologist and previously served as FDA Commissioner during President Barack Obama’s Administration.
