Statement by MassBio President & CEO Robert K. Coughlin on President Trump’s Proposed NIH Funding Cuts

Mar 16, 2017

"President Trump’s proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) would be devastating for Massachusetts where much of the funding translates into jobs and has defined us as the global leader in developing life saving therapies and  technologies. Moreover, the proposal would be an enormous blow to patients and their families locally and around the world who hope to benefit from this vital innovation that is created in our academic institutions and medical centers."

Massachusetts is home to 5 of the top 6 NIH funded hospitals and receives per capita the most NIH funding in the country.  When this science creates new breakthrough therapies and cures, it keeps people healthy and out of the hospital. That saves money.

The Massachusetts supercluster is home to more than 60,000 biopharma employees, 25 million square feet of lab space and companies with 1,600 drug candidates in the pipeline.
