Overview
Founded in Worcester, in 1865, WPI was one of the nation’s earliest technological universities. Its continuing mission has been to create and convey the latest science and engineering knowledge in ways that would be most useful to the society. The WPI curriculum has remained true to its original mission of fusing academic inquiry with social needs, of blending abstraction with immediacy, of linking new knowledge to applications.
A new initiative in Life Sciences and Bioengineering is planned that will leverage existing academic research strengths in the Departments of Biology/Biotechnology, Chemistry/Biochemistry and Biomedical Engineering, and the Bioengineering Institute (BEI) at converging interdisciplinary areas including Biomaterials, Biosensors/Medical Devices, Stem Cell/Tissue Regeneration, Bioprocess Manufacturing, NMR Imaging, Medical Devices, Computational Biology, Genetic Engineering and Microbial Systems Engineering.
