An intricate and carefully choreographed day of crane picks was required to convert this historic landmark address, 51 Melcher Street, for lab and research applications. The 100,000 SF building has undergone a complete transformation across all nine floors to accommodate future life science tenants. With active preservation underpinning the entire repositioning effort, the building now contains high-performance and energy-efficient systems to support research and its commitment to achieving LEED Gold Certification.
Installing four Air Source Heat Pumps (Chillers), each weighing 20,680 lbs and measuring 40 feet in length, was mission-critical to the project. These state-of-the-art chillers are NRB-H outdoor reversible heat pump chillers designed for high efficiency, energy savings, and reduced sound emissions. As such, these chillers are well suited to achieve the preservation goal and future life cycle of this building. Hoisting each to the rooftop in this tight urban location was made possible by close coordination between trade partners and the City of Boston to ensure a safe day of crane picks.
